Baseball’s annual Winter Meetings has brought us several big moves. But the biggest isn’t Chris Sale to the Boston Red Sox or Aroldis Chapman heading back to the Bronx…it’s Jeremy Guthrie getting signed by the Melbourne Aces.
Okay, maybe it isn’t the biggest, but with Guthrie’s home in Missouri being 9,265 miles from his new digs in Australia…dude is definitely traveling the farthest.
Tuesday, the Aces announced the 12-year big league veteran would be joining the team for the second half of its season.
“This guy is playing in the Major Leagues right now and pitched in a World Series two years ago, so to have him come out is a major coup for the league,” Aces skipper Jon Deeble said. “It just goes to show that people know about the ABL and are interested in coming out to experience it for themselves.”
As for Guthrie…he’s pretty stoked as well
“I just love the game and playing it in new places,” Guthrie added. “The ABL will be good preparation for the next chapter in my baseball career and hopefully I can help grow the profile of the sport a little bit while I’m out there.”
The 37-year-old righty will get his first taste of baseball “down under” as a member of the ABL’s World All-Star Team on December 22.
