Jerry Remy: “I Have a Right to Make a Living”

Last summer, Jared Remy, son of former Major Leaguer and current Boston Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy was arrested and charged with murdering his girlfriend.

Understandably, the elder Remy chose to take some time off from his gig with the team.  But along the way, Jared’s rap sheet and history of violence became public.

And suffice it to say, it’s longer than any of the Red Sox player’s beards.

For close to half his life, the 35-year-old son of the popular TV personality has been in and out of the courtroom.  According to a Boston Globe story, the guy has been arrested dozens of times and walked out with a success rate, big league closers would be jealous of.

The reason?

A lot of people suggest that it’s because Jared received “special treatment” given the high-priced lawyers provided by his father.  Well, thankfully, Jared is still in jail, waiting for his October trial and Jerry…well, he’s back to work.

Unfortunately, not everyone is happy about that.

The battle cry of the fans is that Jerry and his wife enabled their son, spending money to get the courts and the Red Sox (who actually hired Jared following their historic 2004 championship run) to look the other way and, ultimately, allowing the guy to kill.

Enter team owner John Henry.  Makes sense that he’s supportive of Jerry…he’s his guy, right?  Well, maybe don’t put words in everyone’s mouth.

“I’ve told him, all of us in Red Sox Nation stand behind him,” Henry told WCVB. “It’s a terrible thing he’s been going through, but we’re really glad to have him back.”

Suffice it to say, this got Red Sox fans a little hot under the collar.

Jerry must’ve heard and read the criticisms because, on Friday, he had some thoughts of his own.

“It’s what I expected when I made my decision before and I just feel that I have to go on with my life in some form and this is what I still enjoy doing,” the former All-Star told WEEI.  “Look, if I didn’t enjoy doing what I’m doing now, if I was at the end of my rope and said I’ve had enough broadcasts, I’d have been gone in a second but it’s a job that I love. I still love it as much as I did 26 years ago when I started it.  I feel like I have a right to make a living and go on and do my job.”

But then there was this.

“Red Sox Nation will make the ultimate decision.  They will make the decision, believe me,” Jerry added.

If you read everything Jerry has been saying…he’s playing it smart.  That said, dude might want to take a little more time off.

It seems like the “Nation” is requesting it.
