The Jets’ hiring of Adam Gase as head coach put a lot of pressure on the team to hire a proven veteran with a track record as its defensive coordinator.
And it appears that’s exactly what they’re trying to do.
New York was in pursuit of Vance Joseph, which probably would’ve been a great hire. Unfortunately for them, he elected to sign with the Cardinals, which makes a ton of sense, as 39-year-old head coach/offensive innovator Kliff Kingsbury clearly needs a veteran defensive mind to balance out the staff.
The Jets may make out OK, though, assuming they can land the candidate they’re currently pursuing. New York is looking to bring on Gregg Williams to serve as defensive coordinator.
New #Jets coach Adam Gase is on the verge of a big hire: Former #Browns interim coach Gregg Williams is in talks with Gase to become their new defensive coordinator, sources say. Things are progressing in this direction, and those involved believe it’ll get done.

This would be an excellent fit, as Williams had the Browns turned around/playing well both on defense, and especially when he took over for Hue Jackson as head coach. Williams’ pressure packages would work well with the players that the Jets have on their roster.
