Oregon defensive tackle Jared Ebert, a junior transfer from Iowa Western Community College, suffered the loss of his father Jim on Tuesday, July 26th. Jim Ebert died while climbing Mt. Whitney with Jared’s brother Justin.
Mr. Ebert was an accomplished mountain climber, rock climber, instructor, filmmaker, nature photographer and guide who taught climbing and wilderness survival training. He led groups who scaled the Alps, Mount Kilamanjaro, and the Andes. He taught climbing to students at the University of Iowa and founded Alpenglow Adventures, an organization that allowed severely disabled individuals the opportunity to experience outdoor adventures with the help of a team of volunteers. His expertise took him all over the world, and he had great pride in a long history of expeditions and achievements without serious injury to any of his students.
The Ebert family has a profound personal faith, and celebration of life ceremonies are being delayed until winter. The Oregon Duck community certainly wishes them strength and comfort in their loss, and will be supportive of Jared as he continues his college career and mourns his father.
