Joe's Mailbag2

Dan Parker: Do you think mike Williams will be a key contributor to the offense this season?

Joe: Mike Williams feels like a wildcard to me. A lot of it has to do with how the Bills are pretty deep at WR and that competition is going to be fierce. Something tells me that if Williams struggles and Woods continues to develop, you will see Woods shoot up as the #2 guy because young blood always gets over on a vet whose contract will go up the following season. In other words, a phase out. Of course, the Bills like to play 3-WR sets, so, that may all be a moot point.

Williams has proven he can get you 60-catches while having an average QB (Josh Freeman) and little help from other WRs (2010-Kellen Winslow was the #2 target for the Bucs when Mike had 65 grabs). I think Williams should be able to thrive if EJ Manuel takes the next step. The Bills have too many guys in the passing game that have to be accountable for and Williams should get some favorable match-ups.

Timothy James Blonsky: Stadium Location? Batavia? Tondawanda? Niagara Falls? And why isn’t a full retrofit of the Ralph, not being considered? Why can’t it be the “Lambeau” of the east? Lastly, Retractable roof dome or open air?

Joe: Yeah..I seriously don’t get why we can’t do the Lamebeau/KC model. I don’t see how making a new stadium will all of a sudden increase revenue because most the region is tapped out as far as having corporations buy suites. In other words, I don’t think a new stadium will suddenly make Cellino/Barnes or whatever local company decide to buy a suite because there’s not much competition in Buffalo for these big companies to spend money on extravagant group outings like Broadway plays or other sporting events. If anything, they could get turned off by it because prices will go up and if you watched the Yanks/Mets stadium fiascoes, they ended up outpricing the market.

It just feels like the NFL wants to bully us into making a new stadium because that’s what they prefer.

As far as location, I’d prefer downtown because I think it would look awesome down there. However, I think the key in all of this is that the stadium is built by some sort of mass transit line that can have a train shuttle folks in from Rochester and Toronto. Make the stadium by the Amtrack station downtown and have shuttles come in specifically on Sundays. You can having the boarding procedure resemble airport security instead of having them wait at the border to check in.

I think that would make the commute easier for everyone. No one likes driving back to Rochester or Toronto after games because it takes too long and you probably don’t want to drink and drive. Having this sort of mass transportation will help lessen the burden and get more people to come down.

As far as dome vs. outdoor, I’d go outdoor, but I’m pretty indifferent about either one.

Brian Donley OK, then… if you go to a restaurant and your ex-wife is your server, how much do you tip?

Joe: Wow. That’s a tough one. It depends who I am with. If I’m with my a G/F who knows that’s my Ex…Not very much because it will bring out petty, jealous bullshit. On the other hand, if you don’t tip her well, then the G/F could see that you are bitter about it. Also, what if I’m trying to get my ex-wife back? Wouldn’t you want to overcompensate? Knowing how I’m the type of guy who buys people drinks even if I hate them, I’d probably give her a little extra.

J.C. McCall If Jeremy Jacobs buys the team, do we need to eliminate tailgating to sell more beer inside the stadium?

Joe- That’s a good question and I tend to think that he may cut back on it. Let’s be honest here, if you get that new stadium, you are going to want a return on that investment. If the Bills decide to do some sort of food court (See: Citi Field), they’ll want you to go inside to buy their food. Being that Jacobs supplies that crappy food at RWS and other venues, tells me he’d probably like you to spend money on his food and if he’s in charge of the team, he’d probably have the power to do that.

It’s a dangerous dynamic in terms of ticket sales because I feel a high number of fans love going to Bills games just because they can tailgate and get wasted prior to it. If you eliminate that or try to cut into it, it could put a snag in ticket sales if the team struggles on the field. I mean, what else is the reason you go to games when the Bills are 4-9 in November? Its the tailgate.

Well, I did read the book, but I can tell you my mindset heading into the scene in the book. My thought was that The Mountain would win. They have just built him up as being this Andre The Giant type of monster and when you see how he’s portrayed on the show, the MAN IS HUGE! Of course, it could be portrayed as the much faster Red Viper will tire the Giant, but I think The Mountain would win. Plus, its GoT, its never a happy ending. EVER!
