Earlier this week, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon continued to “shake things up” in WWE by making several big holiday announcements.
The first announcement was that Dolph Ziggler will battle Drew McIntyre inside a steel cage on the New Year’s Eve special edition of Monday Night Raw next week. The second announcement was that Women’s Tag Team Titles will be coming to WWE for the very first time in 2019.
Finally, Mr. McMahon announced that John Cena will be returning to WWE TV on both Raw and Smackdown Live next week, and WWE even Tweeted the big announcement of Cena’s return. “ALSO NEXT WEEK: @JohnCena returns to #RAW and #SDLive,” read the Tweet from WWE’s official Twitter account.

Despite Mr. McMahon’s big decree, it appears as if lines of communication might have been confused, as WWE taped Raw in Detroit on Friday night and John Cena did not appear at the tapings. It’s always possible Cena could appear in some kind of pre-taped promo segment when the show finally airs, but he will not be returning to in-ring action on the show, and did not appear in front of the live crowd in Detroit.
[lawrence-related id=867560]Cena is on the road with WWE, however, as instead of appearing at the Raw tapings in Detroit, the leader of the Cenation worked the Smackdown live event on Friday night in Baltimore, facing Daniel Bryan in a Steel Cage match. Daniel Bryan won the match when he struck Cena with the WWE Title and escaped the cage. After the match, Bryan tried to attack Cena again with the Title, but Cena reversed the attempt into an AA.

It remains to be seen if Cena will appear on Smackdown Live next week, which airs on New Year’s Day, and will be taped tonight in Pittsburgh. Cena made his return to WWE at the Raw live event at Madison Square Garden on the night after Christmas, and he defeated former Raw GM Baron Corbin in an impromptu match.
We will continue to keep you updated on John Cena’s status as the WWE holiday tour rolls on, and as we approach television next week.
