Wednesday, after all but three voters agreed on what everyone has known for years…Ken Griffey Junior became a Hall of Famer.
Shortly after the announcement was made that second-generation slugger had made it to Cooperstown with a record 99.3% of the vote (after appearing on 437 of the 440 ballots), Cincinnati Reds hero Johnny Bench congratulated the newest member of baseball’s most prestigious fraternity.
Congrats Jr. When you come to Cooperstown, please bring the items you took from my locker as a kid, or I'll take your ring! @BaseballHall
— Johnny Bench (@JohnnyBench_5) January 7, 2016
While it’s not entirely clear what Bench is referring to, one has to assume it has everything to do with the nine years Senior Griffey spent alongside the Hall of Fame catcher and the two World Series rings they won as part of the “Big Red Machine” and Junior hanging out in the clubhouse.
Perhaps we’ll find out during Hall of Fame Weekend July 24.
