Johnny Damon: Fenway Faithful Tougher Than Donald Trump

Donald Trump has a reputation as being tough. So tough, in fact, you’ve got to wonder why anyone would willingly appear on either one of his “Apprentice” TV shows.

Sunday, Johnny Damon follows in the footsteps of Jose Canseco and Darryl Strawberry when he becomes just the third former Major Leaguer to audition for a job with the Trumpster when the latest installment of “The Celebrity Apprentice” premieres on NBC.

But is Damon intimidated by the businessman? Please.

“If you do your job for [Trump], you’ll do great. [George] Steinbrenner is just the same,” the lifetime .284 hitter said after being asked who was the toughest to work for. “The Fenway faithful? You can help them win a championship, but if you put on the pinstripes, you’re in deep trouble. I would say they’re the toughest.”

Makes sense.

It remains to be seen whether or not Damon will best his fellow former New York Yankees (Strawberry was fired during the third episode of the 2010 season, Canseco quit the show in 2011 after just five episodes), but if you believe the rumors…the could-be future-Hall of Famer won’t be in the team picture come finale night.

So, yeah, who cares if he wins or not…it’s all for charity, right? But what about returning to the diamond? Damon hasn’t seen live pitching since August 2012, but, as you might recall, the guy hasn’t officially retired.

“There’s been no phone calls over the past few years, so I can’t expect that there will be one this year. I’m pretty sure I’m going to make an official announcement after the season starts,” the 41-year-old outfielder told MLB Network. “I have child number seven on the way and I’m really looking forward to being a father again…my kids mean the world to me. There’s a good chance I will not be suiting up in baseball again.”
