To say Johnny Damon is modest would be an understatement.
Prior to the 2014 season, the former outfielder announced to the world that he was available to play and/or manage…but only at the Major League level. Now, the 40-year-old would like the world to know that he’s better than half of the guys out there earning a paycheck swinging a bat on a daily basis.
“When you feel you can still outhit at least half the league and you don’t get that call, it’s rough,” Damon said Friday. “The biggest reason to play is to have a chance to win. Obviously, 3000 hits would be great but winning is the reason I started playing this game. I’m going to continue to stay in shape and I’ll be ready.”
I like Damon, I really do. But is he being delusional or, again, just trying to get his name out there. I mean, it isn’t even like he was setting the world on fire when the Cleveland Indians put him out of his misery in August 2012 when, at the time, he was hitting a paltry .222 in 64 games.
It’ll be interested to see if Damon gets any bites on his offer to return. Until then, we’ve got his upcoming appearance on “Celebrity Apprentice” to look forward to.
