A nice recap of his comments yesterday
While you wouldn’t have expected Caldwell – or many head coaches for that matter – to completely distance himself from what Polian said, this struck me as interesting in that in a sense it was just as pointed as the comments Polian made after the Super Bowl.
It also brought to mind something I kept thinking when people reacted with disbelief when Polian said what he did, and that was that while many interpreted the comments as Polian reacting angrily and irrationally to a loss that there likely was a lot of truth in his comments.
It’s something that has kept coming to mind as the team has continued its transition on the offensive line.
The reason for that is Polian said what he said two days after the Super Bowl on his radio, and had had time to digest the loss, and to think about what he wanted to say. Clearly, although the Colts did not allow a sack and although they rushed effectively statistically, something bothered the Colts’ decision-makers about the game beyond just the final score.
I keep going back to something that came out of the Saints’ locker room, that New Orleans went into that game deciding that if they had to make a choice, the Colts’ running game would beat them and not Manning and the passing game. If that meant allowing four or five yards a carry, then that’s what they would allow.
