The Red Sox were sending Jon Lester to the mound last night and hoped that he continued to right the ship. With Buchholz on the shelf, the Sox really need Lester to return to his dominant form. Lester didn't get the win, but he did look like that pitcher we need him to be.
Lester would only give up one run in his outing and it would be in the first inning. Lester continued his pattern of giving up RBIs with 2 outs. Lester gave up an RBI single up the middle to Blanks. Sox 0-1. After that, Lester wouldn't give up anything else to the Padres and looked pretty good. In the bottom of the 4th, the Sox were able to tie the game when Salty hit an RBI double to score Carp. Sox 1-1. Lester kept on rolling and pitched 7 strong innings. The Sox bats weren't able to get him another run, but what is most important is that he looked like that dominant version of himself. Lester's line for the night was 102 pitches, 7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB and 5 Ks.
Tazawa came in to pitch the 8th inning and struck out the side. Koji Uehara came on and pitched a scoreless 9th. The Sox bats would have to score a run in the bottom of the 9th in order to not have to go to extra innings. To start the inning, Sox had Jonny Gomes pinch hit for Brandon Snyder. That was a pretty good choice since Gomes has hit 2 walk off HRs already this season and made it three last night. Gomes hit a ball up to the Monster and the Sox had their 8th walk off win this season. Gomes has sure been fun to watch this season.
Red Sox 2 Padres 1 BOXSCORE
WP: Uehara (2-0) LP: Gregerson (4-4)
