In some rare Tennessee Titan related news during this slow period of the offseason, according to media reports, Texas WR/KR Jordan Shipley is scheduled to make a pre-draft visit to Nashville in the coming weeks.
While his receiving skills are certainly intriguing, his biggest value lies in his ability to return punts and kicks, an area where the Titans are certainly in search of some badly-needed reinforcements.
In addition to the Austin-to-Nashville pipeline that the Titans have constantly utilized while selecting several Texas Longhorns in recent drafts, Shipley already has the approval of Tennessee Titans’ coordinator of college scouting C.O. Brocato, who recently had the following words to say about the former Texas WR/KR:
“When they look at him, the team that drafts him is going to want to cut him every day, but he’ll catch every pass thrown to him for the next 10 years.”
As I mentioned previously, in addition to his Wes Welkeresque receiving skills, he’s also regarded as a more than capable returner. During his days in Austin, Shipley returned a combined total of four kick/punt returns for scores. Even if Shipley wasn’t able to contribute immediately as a target for Vince Young in the passing game, his returning ability could certainly allow him to make an impact during his rookie season, if he’s selected by the Titans.
Of course, just because a guy’s scheduled to visit prior to the draft, doesn’t always equate to him being selected by the team in late April. However, considering the Titans’ lead scout high opinion of him, his status as a Texas alum and his ability to fill a need desperately in need of filling, it’s easy to think that Shipley could land with the Titans on draft-day.
Shipley was expected to be a second-rounder, but a disappointing showing at the combine may lead to him being available in the third or possibly fourth round. With the Titans lacking a second-rounder (thanks to Jared Cook) while having two third-round selections, there’s a good chance that Shipley’s NFL destination could be Nashville if he’s still on the board.
