It’s hard to believe, but it’s been nearly ten years since Juiced…the Jose Canseco-penned New York Times bestselling memoir of his baseball career.
And you can bet that somewhere, right now, the embattled former outfielder is out there still talking about it to anyone who will listen.
Case in point…this.
“I single-handedly could have stopped the PED era easily behind closed doors,” Canseco said during an appearance with the Regina Red Sox, “but Major League Baseball decided to blackball me and get me out of the game completely, which is probably one of the biggest mistakes they ever made.”
But, wait, there’s more.
“I made the mistake of writing that book, Juiced, against Major League Baseball, even though the book, word for word, was exactly what happened,” Canseco continued. “But you don’t go against one of the most powerful entities in the world. To me, you have religion, government and Major League Baseball. Those are the three most powerful entities in the world.”
Thing is…dude’s probably right.
Coincidence or not, since the book came out, the face of drug testing in baseball has changed and we’ve seen a number of the top players get busted…a far cry from the summer of 1998 when admitted user Mark McGwire and suspected user Sammy Sosa were credited with saving the game.
So what’s next for Canseco? He was the subject of an award-winning documentary, served as the Director of Baseball Operations for the Texas Winter League and would love to get back into the Majors as a manager.
“That would be kind of interesting and a freak show to see that. I don’t think it would happen. Not that I’m not qualified…I’m definitely qualified, but Major League Baseball would not allow it,” Canseco said. “I’ve seen other players in the past who’ve done a lot less and got blackballed. Can you imagine what Pete Rose did with gambling? They’re still holding it against him. What I did to Major League Baseball was a thousand times worse. I told the dirty secret.”
