With all due respect to Doug Williams who is a personal hero of mine, Josh Freeman has passed him up as the best QB this franchise has ever seen. There is no rating for ‘best’, no criteria that you can measure. Its just something you have to know. He hasnt thrown the most Touchdowns ever, with his 25 he fell short of Brad Johnson by 1 score. (Hmm, the Kellen Winslow score vs Detroit anyone?) Last season Freeman tossed 18 interceptions in half a season, and everyone was up in arms, saying that over a full schedule, that would give him 30 plus picks, something Vinny Testaverde. Instead Josh threw only 6 all year. Doug Williams at his best threw 11 picks in the strike shortened 1982 season. Doug was the closest thing we’ve ever had to a franchise QB because he was a winner, and the team was always got behind him; he was a leader. The team knew if Williams was in the game, they had a chance to win. This 2010 team feels the same way when Josh Freeman take the huddle. They know that it can come down to the wire and Freeman can get the job done, especially in the fourth quarter where he already has 7 comeback victories in his pocket. If yards are what your looking for, Freeman put up brilliant numbers this year with 3,451 yards good enough for a top 5 finish in franchise history. Williams best was the 1981 year when he threw TD Bombs to Kevin House to the tune of 3563 yards, But Brad Johnson holds that record with 3811 total yards thrown in 2003. For the first time ever, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have built an offense that is capable of exciting fans, scoring points, and winning games. Only unlike recent years, this offense, and this team, is built to last for the long haul. Youngsters like Arrelious Benn, Kareem Huggins and Kregg Lumpkin will add to the mix next season every one is back contributing to the effort put forward with names like Mike Williams, LeGarrette Blount, and recently Briscoe and Parker.
