Make no mistake about it; there are some J.J. fans out there!! And with good reason, J J has a remarkable level of understanding of the game, and is very talented physically as well. But this team belongs to the other Josh, and Mr. Freeman has still shown more than any other Bucs young Quarterback in decades. But with the NFL talking about going to an 18 game schedule soon, the value of a team’s depth, especially at the Back Up Quarterback position, cannot be undervalued. It’s clear Josh Johnson is being groomed to be the career backup of Freemans, but unlike last year when he started 4 games but looked lost in headlights for most of them, J.J. has looked solid in his role; enough to where Bucs fans, players, and coaches should not have too much to worry about if/when his number is called on to come in. We know that J.J. can take off, he has gifted feet, but that has also been his undoing; he takes off too often, and too early. As a Quarterback, your primary job is to throw, and if you can run, great. J. J. was doing it the opposite too much last year. Not so much in 2010; Josh Johnson has looked sharp throwing the ball, and accurate, all while at the same time still being able to shuffle those legs when they need to be to get a first down. Josh Freeman’s cast has come off, but if he cannot make the Cleveland game, the attitude toward the QB position may not be as dire as it would have been.
