Josh Johnson’s Performance Saturday eases our mind a bit

With all due respects and apologies to the Josh Johnson fan club members and those who don’t realize they are one of them (Dan Sileo), Josh Freeman is the Franchise Quarterback, and that is the end of the story. So said the Buccaneers many times over, with management coming out and saying directly J.J. is being groomed to be our career #2. Well that time is now, because number 2 will have to step up and play these last two preseason games, and in the increasingly apparently unlikely event Mr. Freeman wont be ready to start vs the Browns, J.J. will have to be ready then too. After last Saturday night in Miami, that prospect didn’t look too appealing, as Johnson took a step back from last season. But considering the field position, and conditions, its possible that was an aberration. After this preseason game against the Chiefs, J.J. did a very good job against the starting KC men with Starting calibur Buccaneers around him to give us some peace of mind knowing that if “The Franchise” cannot go for a game, that we still have a shot at winning said game. Backup Josh went 6 of 10 for 113 yards and a TD without an INT, which is pretty consistant, and to top it off he made some nice moves with his feet as he always does, without making those said moves his main arsenal of weapons. The only drawback to this are the people who will now think that J.J. should be the starting QB, and get their fires fueled by the likes of one Dan Sileo who says arm strength is over-rated. No Dan, ONLY arm-strength is over-rated, but having it isnt. Its the lack of that dooms QBs in this league, and in the past for our team (see Shawn King, Bruce Gradkowski). Johnson is a great West Coast QB, and is a tad bit more accurate than Freeman, at this stage of the game. But this offense is more than just West Coast. Its west coast with several shots down-field during the game. That downfield, that’s where Freeman comes in. Or at least, will come in, when he is healthy.
