Judge Not

Johnny O rightly says, “Don’t grade a draft”

There is a far more simple reason we have not graded the Colts’ 2010 Draft.

There’s just no desire.

And there’s just no way to do it.

The simple truth is I don’t know enough about the players the Colts selected to grade them, either individually, or as a whole. The more complex truth is it’s probably just as true that the Colts – even Colts President Bill Polian – likely couldn’t accurately grade the draft.

Despite the multitude of draft grades you see, the draft doesn’t work that way.

It’s not a quick-grade proposition, and although it’s common to hear presidents, general managers and anyone else associated with a team’s draft say you can judge a draft for three, four or five years, even that’s not true. Because, really, how do you judge?

Even the best drafts almost always have more eventual misses than hits.
