The sinkerballin’, groundballin’, Fenway favorite (from the minor league game at Fenway two years ago) is headed to the bigs.
Justin Masterson will be making a spot start and since he’s not on the 40-man roster, someone’s gonna hafta go. I’m not really sure who it could be, so be sure to check the comments as I’m sure readers more informed than I will bring the names up. (I wonder since Hansen went over an inning tonight if they could demote him to Triple-A and then waive a minor league player off the 40?)
Masterson will kick his big league career off at 1:35 PM against Joe Saunders in the final home game of this homestand. He is 22 years old and has started four games in Portland so far. With just one win to his credit, it comes with a 0.95 ERA in 19 innings, 14 hits, zero homers, five walks and 23 strikeouts. His groundball to fly ball ratio is at 3.57 and while he does profile as a reliever long term, it’s gonna be quite nice to see him starting. This is the era of the kids, indeed.
