KML Wins 8th Big East Freshman of the Week Honors

In what should be a precursor to winning the Big East Freshman of the Year Award, UConn Huskies women’s basketball freshman Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis picked up her eighth Big East Freshman of the Week honors on Tuesday.

STORRS, Conn. (February 28, 2012) – Freshman forward Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis earned her eighth BIG EAST weekly accolade of her career as she was tabbed the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.

UConn's Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis scored a career-high 27 points against Marquette during the Huskies' 85-45 win over the Golden Eagles at the Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee Saturday. Mosqueda-Lewis also passed Nykesha Sales and Rebecca Lobo for most points scored in a season by a freshman. Mosqueda-Lewis, chosen as the 2011-12 BIG EAST Preseason Freshman of the Year, earns the award after averaging 20.0 ppg and 3.0 rpg per game in a 2-1 week for Connecticut. The Huskies posted a pair of wins against BIG EAST opponents, winning at Pittsburgh on Feb. 21 and at Marquette on Feb.21. UConn returned home on Monday, Feb. 27, where they fell to No. 3 Notre Dame for the second time this season.

Mosqueda-Lewis shot 56 percent from the field as she was 9-of-12 from the floor and sank a trio of 3-pointers and had a team-high 23 points against Pitt in the Huskies 86-37 win. At Marquette, Mosqueda-Lewis put up 27 points to notch a new career-high as she went 5-for-9 from behind the arch.  Mosqueda-Lewis has recorded eight 20-plus and 24 double-digit performances in her young career.

Notre Dame’s Skylar Diggins was named as the Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the BIG EAST. Diggins averaged 19.7 ppg  and 6.0 apg in a 3-0 week for the Irish to help Notre Dame clinch its first outright regular-season title.

The Huskies return to the court on Sunday, March 4, at 8 p.m. in the BIG EAST Championship Quarter Finals at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. UConn earned the No. 3 seed and will play the winner of No. 6 Rutgers versus No. 11 Cincinnati/No. 14 Marquette.
