After an up and down start to the season for the St. Louis Blues, Ken Hitchcock has no idea what kind of team he has playing in front of him. That’s not an analogy or some sort of analysis, that’s exactly what the head coach said as seen in an interview with ESPN.
“We have no idea what type of team we have.
This might be one of those years where we’re just going to have to scramble to stay afloat. You don’t know. We didn’t have any adversity last year until the last two weeks, and then we just got bombed with it. But this one is different. We’ve had nothing but an unsettled roster both at practice and games since the second game of the season.”
Hitchcock basically summarizes what most fans have been thinking through the early going. At times the Blues have looked dominant (their loss to LA), they’ve bested some strong sides (Chicago and Dallas), but they also looked dreadful against Anaheim and Vancouver. Injuries and a nasty infection have made it difficult to analyze the St. Louis roster, so Hitchcock’s comments are right on the money.
This team is going to be interesting and fun to follow, but it’s not always going to be easy. The West is loaded. The Blues are an extremely strong team, but they still maintain certain characteristics (slow starts, bad penalties, questionable offensive depth) which may force you to rip out your hair.
Hopefully the added adversity and unknown identity leads to the Blues becoming a stronger team come playoff time.
