While the Chargers aren’t sure where they will be playing home games next season, they are sure of who will be running the offense next year.
The Chargers agreed to bring back Ken Whisenhunt as the offensive coordinator, after he was fired just a month into this season as head coach of the Tennessee Titans. He will return as the OC, which is the same position he had when he was in San Diego in 2013.
Running the offense in 2013, which as the only year the Chargers have made the playoffs under Mike McCoy, Whisenhunt led the Chargers offense and finished with them ranked fifth in the NFL that season, despite a 9-7 record. More importantly, under the Wiz, The Bolts ran the ball with more consistency, something they failed to do these past couple seasons with Frank Reich calling the plays.
The fact that Whisenhunt knows this offense, knows Mike McCoy, knows Philip Rivers, and knows how to build and maintain a solid running game made this decision almost a no-brainer for the Chargers. After the Chargers moved up in the 2015 draft to select Melvin Gordon in the first round, the rookie from Wisconsin struggled to put up any kind of consistent numbers. While Gordon can’t be entirely to blame, due to the offensive line injuries woes and the questionable play-calling at timed by Frank Reich, Gordon will look to improve in 2016. When Gordon got room and time to run, he showed flashes of his brilliance that he had as a Badger.
With Philip Rivers behind center, Keenan Allen returning from injury, and Melvin Gordon showing potential when given an opportunity, maybe Whisenhunt can bring this offense back to their glory days of the 2013 season.
Even though the relocation situation is a bit of a nightmare, to say the least, having Whisenhunt back running the offense is somewhat reassuring for a team that struggled offensively in 2015. Welcome back, Ken Whisenhunt.
