In 2009, for the first time in over ten years, the Tennessee Titans decided to once again dip their hands into the NFL Draft’s first-round wide receiver cookie jar by selecting Kenny Britt.
The former Rutgers star failed to disappoint, stepping up with a more-than-solid first-year campaign in the form of 42 catches for 701 and three touchdowns. He was a physical presence at WR, contributing as a blocker in the run game in addition to emerging as perhaps the team’s most formidable downfield threat in the passing game.
Despite slipping into Jeff Fisher’s doghouse due to failing to stay in shape during the offseason, I’m still pretty optimistic about the continued development of Kenny Britt in 2010.
I became a believer in Kenny Britt’s talents during the Titans’ season-opening loss to the Steelers. Sure, at times he played like a rookie as indicated by his inability to prevent Troy Polamalu from making an interception. However, at the opposite end of the evaluation spectrum, Britt showed his playmaking potential with an impressive 57-yard reception and ending the evening with 4 catches for 85 yards.
The peak of Kenny’s rookie season was his stellar performance during the Titans’ unforgettable 20-17 victory over Arizona. In addition to snagging 7 receptions for 128 yards, his final grab with no time remaining on the clock served as the game-winning score in an exciting Titans’ victory.
Due to such a solid, first-year showing, Britt was poised to become an even bigger factor in the Titans’ vertical attack in 2010. Unfortunately, his recent stint in Fisher’s doghouse has served as a setback in Kenny’s efforts to accomplish bigger and better things in his sophomore year.
However, let’s not forget that Kenny was able to overcome some lingering hamstring issues prior to the preseason of his rookie year. Sure, he should have been more disciplined and acted like a professional by getting his body ready for the upcoming season but by most accounts, Britt has a solid work-ethic and I’m fully expecting him to work through his recent digressions and emerge as the team’s #1 WR this year and beyond.
If Kenny can avoid the injury bug, I’m hopeful that his first 1,000 yard season will come in 2010.
Any thoughts or guesses on Kenny’s level of production in 2010? Feel free to contribute in the comments section below.
