ROGERS ARENA, VANCOUVER, BC — Before Steve Kerr was the head coach of the Golden State Warriors, he was a point guard in the NBA.
Most NBA fans remember Kerr as a three-point shooter for the Chicago Bulls back in the Michael Jordan era. During his time as a player in the NBA, Kerr also played for the San Antonio Spurs for four seasons under head coach Gregg Popovich.
While on the Spurs, Kerr averaged 3.7 points per game along with 39% from behind the three-point line and 41% from the field. He also was a part of the Spurs’ first two championship teams in 1999 and 2003.
During the Warriors’ recent preseason road trip to Vancouver to face the Toronto Raptors, Kerr recalled a time in that city — when the Memphis Grizzlies were still the Vancouver Grizzlies — when he took some teammates on a little field trip.
“I remember taking half the Spurs team on a seaplane, the day before a game, an off day.” Kerr said as he spoke to the media before the Warriors preseason debut. “At the Pacific Hotel, staring at these seaplanes taking off, I was thinking, ‘Man I gotta get on one of those.’” Then he contacted the concierge to set up everything.
“I didn’t tell Pop,” Kerr said. “He would not have been happy, half his team going up in a sea plane above.”
While there are no plans for the NBA to return to Vancouver with an expansion team, Kerr recalled, “Love the area, beautiful city. We’re really thrilled to be back here already.”
