The former UC secondary coach/special teams coach/Cincinnati area-Northern Kentucky recruiter Kerry Coombs has left UC to become the DB coach at Ohio State. Mark Elder will take over the recruiting duties. Paul Dehner Jr got some quotes from Butch Jones because he’s the man.
On Coombs leaving:
“Obviously, family decisions come in and opportunities that maybe could set him up for a lifetime. We are very, very close. We spent a lot of time discussing it. At the end of the day, he has to make a decision that he feels best for him and his family.”
On recruiting:
“(Recruiting) will not suffer one bit. We have great coaches, great recruiters. It’s all about relationships. The high school coaches in the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area understand that we are their football team, we are their institution and we are open to them. We have those relationships already etched in stone.”
Finally, on replacements:
“We will do a national search,” Jones said. “We’ll have the best of the best. My phone has already been blowing up and candidates from the National Football League to all over the country and the big thing is going to be the best fit for us. The greatest teacher, the greatest character individual and greatest recruiter that we can find.”
“Everyone understands what we have. We really are an attractive commodity in the world of college football. People see what we are doing here at the University of Cincinnati. They have great respect of our coaches and like what we are doing.”
My twitter friend Eric Lilly made a great point when he said this was a Mick Cronin move. If you forget, Cronin was on Bob Huggins’ staff, then left to be a Rick Pitino assistant at Louisville. Cronin wanted more experience to get a head coaching job. He got hired at Murray St and ended up at UC. Coombs has a higher profile at OSU which he can use to springboard to the MAC, specificially Central Michigan, and can be hired in 6 years when Butch Jones leaves after winning 6 national titles in a row.
