In yesterday’s match up between the Warriors and Wizards, there was a more important story line than the Warriors suffering their 10th loss of the season. Kevin Durant suffered a sprained MCL and a bone bruise less than one minute into the game. His current timeline has him being reevaluated in four weeks time.
This is the second injury to big time contenders this season after Kevin Love suffered a knee injury before the All-Star break. With Durant’s injury, he has a chance to play again in the regular season. Since Golden State has already clinched a playoff spot, don’t expect them to push him out to quickly.
What this means for the playoff race is unclear. The Warriors are currently four games ahead in first place. After the Spurs, the next team is another eight games out. Remember, the Warriors still have the reigning two time MVP, and two other All-Stars on their roster. It isn’t like they are lacking in firepower. Curry and Thompson definitely have the ability to make up for Durant’s scoring. However they are going to miss his rebounding and defense the most. A seven-footer with his length and speed is almost unseen in the NBA, except for the Greek Freak.
Depending on how long and how badly Durant’s injury could be, this could open the door for an easier finals for their opponent. If the Cavs make it, as they are expected, it would help to not have one of the top 5 players in the league on the floor defending them. No one wants to see a finals missing the best players, so let’s hope Durant can get healthy in time.
