One of the most talked about free agency storylines of the NBA off season has officially come to an end. In a post to The Players Tribune, PF Kevin Love officially announced that he will return to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Love, who was traded last season and joined LeBron James and the Cavs, had one year left on his contract before opting out last month. After a few rumblings surfaced in terms of whether he was preparing to take his talents elsewhere, Love officially agreed to a 5-year/$110M contract to stay put in Cleveland.
Love averaged 16.4 ppg last season, his lowest since 2009, but proved to be a key factor in the Cleveland’s playoff push. A dislocated shoulder would put Love on the bench for the remainder of the season and seemingly put a dagger in the Cavs’ championship hopes.
“We have unfinished business and now it’s time to get back to work,” Love proclaimed in his post. While Love seems to be settled in for the long-haul, Cleveland is working to gather the remaining pieces for next season. Power forward Tristian Thompson, who wowed fans during the playoffs also locked in his spot on the team, signing a deal worth up to $80M. The next piece of the puzzle will be crafting a deal for James.
With a returning Love, healthy Kyrie Irving, MVP caliber James, and plenty more time in free agency, the Cavs are ready to make a campaign for the 2016 NBA Finals.
