Former Oakland Raiders head coach and current USC head coach Lane Kiffin had his arbitration case denied by the NFL, thus ensuring that Al Davis won’t have to pay the remainder of his contract.
This decision finally closes the book on the ill-fated experiment of Kiffin as a head coach in the NFL. He was fired in September of 2008 after originally being hired in January of 2007.
Kiffin was originally greeted by the Raiders with optimism as a fresh face who was going to lead the Silver and Black out of the wilderness after the 2006 2-14 debacle. However, as the wins failed to materialize under his leadership and rumors leaked about Kiffin pursuing jobs in the NCAA ranks, it became a nearly-year long soap opera of whether or not Kiffin would be fired until it reached its climax with Al Davis firing him in a surreal press conference by the light of the overhead projector.
Kiffin responded by filing a grievance with the NFL regarding the remainder of his contract which he claimed he was owed. Meanwhile, Kiffin worked as the head coach at the University of Tennessee for one year then abandoned the Volunteers to accept the top job at the University of Southern California.
The arbitration proess has lingered longer than Kiffin donned the Silver and Black of the Oakland Raiders. Al Davis won’t have to pay “Lance” the remainder of his contract.
