Fangraphs writer Kiley McDaniel is known for his draft and prospect analysis. Today he released his 2015 MLB draft rankings for April. As you can tell by the headline, Ian Happ is ranked 8th. Here’s the appropriate paragraph:
8. Ian Happ, RF, Cincinnati Video: Happ has been moving up and down in the 5-20 range for me all spring. He played shorstop as a freshman and second base two summers ago on the Cape, but has been a corner outfielder since. Some scouts think he can still play second or third and that makes his above average bat and power from both sides of the plate even more attractive.
Happ is a junior who has said he hasn’t made a decision about if he’ll leave Cincinnati. His current line heading into this weekend’s series at Houston are:
.397 average / .519 obp / .719 slugging / 1.238 OPS
He’s 48-121 with 10 homers and 9 doubles. Happ has walked 33 times, hit by one pitch, while only striking out 31. He’s just 5-11 on stolen base attempts, which is the one blemish on his great, great season.
It would be a stunner if Happ stayed at Cincinnati. Especially with this weak draft class and his incredibly high stock. It would be very hard to turn down millions of dollars.
