The Sacramento Kings will have to finish the season without their two best players. The team officially shutdown DeMarcus Cousins and Rudy Gay for the final three games this afternoon due to injuries.
Cousins missed the previous three games with a sore right foot. Further examination from Dr. Richard Ferkel in Los Angeles revealed an accumulation of lower leg injuries dating back to last summer for the 24-year-old center, including ankle sprains and a calf strain.
The Kings All-Star center concludes his most productive season in the league, averaging 24.1 points, 12.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.7 blocks and 1.5 steals. By season’s end, he will have missed a total of 23 games due to injury or illness, but he is expected to make a full recovery in time for training camp.
Gay missed three games with a concussion to start the month of April before returning last Tuesday against the Timberwolves. After dropping 33 points in 38 minutes against Minnesota, Gay revealed to media members that he still had a headache. That landed the 28-year-old wing back in the league’s concussion protocol.
Like Cousins, Gay had a career year statistically. In 68 games this season, Gay averaged 21.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.0 steals in 35.4 minutes per night.
The Kings currently sit at 27-52 on the season. They need one more win over the next three games to match last season’s win total of 28. if they hope to accomplish that goal, it will be without their two leading scorers.
