Thornton heads to Brooklyn to provide bench scoring.
The Brooklyn Nets, looking to add more scoring to their bench, traded Jason Terry and Reggie Evans for Sacramento’s Marcus Thornton.
Brooklyn Nets
Jason Terry was supposed to provide bench scoring, but had struggled this season, averaging just 4.5 points per game shooting 36 percent. Thornton is averaging 8.3 points, with a field goal percentage of 38 percent while shooting only 31 percent from three (both career lows). It is understood Thornton wasn’t Brooklyn’s first option, as the Nets were looking to acquire Jarrett Jack, but Cleveland was unwilling to take Jason Terry. Thornton’s numbers are down, but the trade makes sense for Brooklyn, who need more backcourt scoring off the bench. Thornton has a contract running through next season in which he will make $8.5 million dollars, but Brooklyn has no problem paying the luxury tax so. If Thornton can improve his shooting percentages, he could be a nice piece for Brooklyn come playoff time.
Trade Grade: B-
Sacramento Kings
Sacramento receives two players both with two years left on their contracts, but with their salaries will save a little under $2 million next season. I’m not sure if Terry will be able to recapture his shooting form, but may find some minutes if Sacramento trades Jimmer Fredette. Even so, I don’t see Terry playing a large role with the Kings. Evans could find some minutes because of his rebounding ability, but also appears surplus to frontcourt players Quincy Acy, Derrick Williams, and Carl Landry, who play primarily off the bench. His small contract justify his spot on the roster however, and should injuries pile up would be a decent fill in on the defensive side.
Trade Grade: C+
Summary
Brooklyn was looking for more bench scoring, and Sacramento was looking to save some money. Both teams got what they wanted, even if this wasn’t their first deal. Thornton could be a nice addition for Brooklyn, while Terry and Evans provide a bit a depth at a smaller price than Thornton.
