The Sacramento Kings have waived guard Arron Afflalo one year after signing him as a free agent.
The Kings cut ties with Afflalo on Friday before his entire $12.5 million contract for the 2017-18 season would become guaranteed. Afflalo will get $1.5 million instead.
In 61 games played (45 starts) with the Kings during the 2016-17 season, Afflalo averaged 8.4 points (.440 FG%, .411 3pt%, .892 FT%), 2.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 25.9 minutes per game. The 10-year NBA veteran has accrued career averages of 11.3 points (.451 FG%, .386 3pt%, .825 FT%), 3.0 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 28.4 minutes per contest in 709 NBA games with Detroit (2007-09), Denver (2009-12 & 2014-15), Orlando (2012-14), and New York (2015-16).
It’s very obvious that the Kings are fully committed to the youth movement and simply didn’t see much value in Afflalo returning as a veteran who can mentor the younger players. They feel like he wants to go to a situation that would give him the best opportunity to win.
Chris Paul has been re-elected as president of the National Basketball Players Association and Kings shooting guard, Garrett Temple, will assist him as the new vice president.
Temple has a three-year term as vice president, which also begins immediately. He replaces Kyle Korver in that role.
Temple is a great member of the Sacramento community, but he is also very involved back home in his state of Louisiana, where he assisted LSU. Therefore, this new position and role in the NBPA suits him naturally because of his great leadership qualities.
