Under the original Los Angeles Rams plan, 2016 No. 1 NFL Draft choice Jared Goff was to be groomed slowly.
But after a 4-12 season in which Goff was 0-7 as a starter and a coaching change took place even before the year was over, the days of the franchise taking its time with Goff may be over.
Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated’s MMQB.com (h/t fansided.com) reported that the Rams may have an interest in current Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins in 2018. The Redskins and Cousins so far have been unable to agree on a long-term contract, and Washington has less than two weeks to get a deal done, place the franchise tag on him for the second straight year—at a $23.95 million price for 2017—or allow him to become a free agent.
The Redskins’ stance with Cousins, who has thrown for more than 9,000 yards in the last two seasons combined, has weakened considerably with the San Francisco 49ers’ hiring of Kyle Shanahan and the Rams’ hiring of Sean McVay as head coaches. Both Shanahan and McVay served as offensive coordinator in Washington during the quarterback’s five-year NFL career.
The 49ers would become a prime destination spot this season for Cousins if for some reason the Redskins wanted to sever ties with the quarterback, but that scenario seems unlikely unless Washington has some scheme to find another starting quarterback in 2017.
As far as the Rams are concerned, Goff could have 2017 to prove himself—although there is speculation that L.A. could bring in a veteran quarterback, with Tony Romo’s name even getting a mention. If Goff can’t get the job done, Cousins might want to play for the coach that has helped him become one of the elite quarterbacks in the league.
Adding intrigue to the Cousins situation is a tweet from ESPN’s Jason Reid last week:
For the past couple of years, former Redskins officials who know Cousins have said he really doesn’t want to be in Ashburn. He wants tag.
