Koji Blows Save, Allows 5 runs in Loss to the Mariners

Last night the game was Joe Kelly vs. Felix Hernandez, so not many people had this one inked down as an automatic win.  However, Joe Kelly did his part and Cespedes took Hernandez deep, so it looked like the unthought of might happen until the 9th inning happened.  Koji Uehara took the mound and had the worst relief performance of his career to not only blow the save, but give the Mariners the win.

Joe Kelly and Felix Fernandez both kept the game scoreless for quite a well.  Bogaerts hit a ball to the Monster that was first called foul, then reviewed and still called foul, so no homer for Bogie.  Nothing else really happened until the 5th inning.  In the top of the inning Joe Kelly pitched a scoreless inning, but he felt something in his shoulder in the end of the inning.  Farrell and the trainers came out and he said he was okay, but that would be the last inning he would pitch for precautionary reasons.  In the bottom of the inning the drama continued.  Felix Hernandez would end up hitting Xander Bogaerts in the helmet with an off speed pitch.  In no way was it intentionally, but it was still pretty scary.  Bogaerts would get up and stay in the game and even field his position in the next inning, but then he was pulled as well.  The team is putting him through concussion testing moving forward.

The Sox got to Hernandez and got on the scoreboard when Nava double, they intentionally walked Ortiz and then Cespedes made them pay with a 3 run homerun to the Monster.  Boom.  Sox 3-0.  The rest of the game would be in the hands of the Sox bullpen with scoreless pitching from Breslow, Badenhop and Layne.  Koji Uehara would take the mound with a 3 run lead, which is usually more than enough.  The inning would fall apart for Koji and for the Sox.  Koji had the bases loaded with 2 outs and just couldn’t get that 3rd out.  Jackson hit a 2 run RBI double, Ackley hit a single to left to neither Cespedes nor Holt could get to that scored 2 runs to give the Mariners the lead and then they even got an insurance run when Cano hit a single to right and some lackluster fielding from Nava allowed Ackley to score.  Sox 3-5.  That is probably the most horrible inning I have seen all season and this season has had some pretty low lows.  The Sox weren’t able to rally in the bottom of the inning and the Sox lost their 6th straight game.
