You know what this was? It was a 60-minute-long tribute to new Ring of Honor member Tony Dungy. Because it was Dungy who spoke incessantly of “no explanations, no excuses.” It was Dungy who hammered home the notion of “next man up,” which sounds like a whole lot of lip service until you watch this team play year after remarkable year.“This is what we’ve always done,” Dungy, the former Colts coach, said, holding tight to the game ball. “It’s what I preached when I got here and (coach) Jim (Caldwell) has just carried it on. There’s so many guys who are still here — Jeff (Saturday), Ryan Diem, Reggie (Wayne), Peyton (Manning), Robert (Mathis), Gary (Brackett) and Dwight (Freeney), and they show the way. The thing is the veterans didn’t play with any panic. They expect the new guys to play well, and they did.”
