There has always been this fan talk: Well, he’s always hurt, so why keep him?
Here’s why:
This year, he will earn a humble base salary of only $2.3 million. That’s a very small financial risk; chump change. If he stays healthy, even if he gives Indy half a season and plays in the postseason, he’s worth every penny and more.
The real issue of his future won’t need to be addressed until next season, when his contract increases to a $5 million base, and the year after that when it increases to $7 million.
Before then, though, you keep Sanders, you hold onto the productive Melvin Bullitt as an insurance policy, and hope for the best.
