The Story: The Angels appear to be reluctant to trade Mark Trumbo despite heavy interest.
The Monkey Says: This is what I have been saying all along, but part of me thinks that this particular report might just be a bluff in order to get teams to up their offers in order to "convince" the Angels to part ways with Trumbo.
The Story: Mike Trout deserves the AL MVP.
The Monkey Says: We all know he is the best, the BBWAA is the only group that actually seems to think that he isn't the MVP. So when you say "Something about that just doesn't feel right." Look at the people responsible for that decision.
The Story: Jon Morosi speculates on a possible Howie Kendrick-Doug Fister swap.
The Monkey Says: Fister has two years of arbitration left, so the Angels may not be all that interested, especially since Fister figures to be more expensive than Kendrick in 2015. Also, I suspect one of the reasons the Tigers are shopping a pitcher is to reduce payroll, so bringing back Kendrick would not accomplish that. However, on a pure talent basis, that trade does make a lot of sense.
The Story: The Angels need to fix their defense just as much as they need to fix their pitching.
The Monkey Says: Single year defensive metrics are suspect, so using DRS as a measure here should be taken with a grain of salt. That being said, we know the defense was much worse last year. The good news is there is a good chance they will gain some improvement just by having guys healthy and having better years. But trading Howie Kendrick presents a big problem as he is quality defender who is likely to be replaced by Grant Green, a poor defender at second thus far in his young career at the position.
The Monkey Says: Yeah, the report seems pretty bad, but does it matter? This was a report commissioned by the city, not the team. The city had to know the firm they hired was likely to side with the Angels, so they are only trying to forward an agenda they have already bough into. The flaws in the report isn't going to change the council members' minds, though public outcry could. Even still, the city is only really debating the wisdom handing free land to the Angels, not whether or not to keep the Halos in the city itself.
