The Story: The Angels have contacted free ageny pitcher Bronson Arroyo.
The Monkey Says: Arroyo is a fallback option. He has had success the last few years, but with his lack of velocity and strikeouts, it is a smoke-and-mirrors kind of success. That may not translate well to the American League at this stage of his career. The only truly attractive thing about him (other than his musical abilities) is that he has thrown at least 199 innings in nine consecutive seasons. This is the same logic that led to the Joe Blanton signing. Hopefully the Angels can add a more impactful starter instead.
The Story: Omar Vizquel has left the Angels to become the first base coach for the Detroit Tigers.
The Monkey Says: It seemed like Vizquel was not long for this world after he got passed over for the third base coach job on Scioscia's staff. He badly wants to be a manager, so jumping at this chance makes a lot of sense.
The Story: Sizing up potential trade partners for the Angels.
The Monkey Says: The Blue Jays aren't on this list, which is surprising given their expressed interest in Kendrick, Iannetta and Conger. I don't say that to undercut the piece, but rather to point out how many potential trade partners the Angels really have since they have so many different pieces to offer.
The Story: Chris Iannetta is a "could-have-been-a-free-agent" All-Star.
The Monkey Says: And yet he still might end up changing teams this offseason.
The Story: The Phillies are targeting Peter Bourjos via trade but there doesn't appear to be a match.
The Monkey Says: There is no match if the Angels are looking for starting pitching, but that may not necessarily be what the Angels go after with Bourjos. If they can swap Kendrick for a good, young starter and then use whatever budget room they have to sign a reliable veteran like Vargas to fill out the final rotation spot, Bourjos can be used to fill other holes. Perhaps the Angels could get 3B Cody Asched and a relief arm like Bastardo, De Fratus or Diekman, then it could be something they consider. I don't know that I would do that because I have long been opposed to trading a talent like Bourjos for bullpen help, but Asche might make it worthwhile.
