The Story: The Angels "insulted" Torii Hunter with an offer of a one-year, $5 million contract.
The Monkey Says: That is straight from Hunter's mouth, so there is no reason to doubt it or the fact that he felt disrespected by it. That piece of information certainly makes it clear that Dipoto never had any intention of bringing him back and really just made the offer so he could say that he made one.
The Story: Mike Trout has been nominated for the Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year.
The Monkey Says: But he still isn't going to win the AL MVP.
The Story: The statistical revolution in baseball still doesn't have the muscle to make Mike Trout the AL MVP.
The Monkey Says: See, this is what I mean and a more measured way of saying what I ranted about earlier this week. People just don't want to embrace the evolution of the game and the way people understand it. As a result, Trout is going to be the innocent victim of stubborn, old blowhards refusing to reconsider their beliefs.
The Story: Miguel Cabrera is the right call for MVP over Mike Trout.
The Monkey Says: Or they will fail to reconsider their beliefs and then use that stubbornness to troll their own reader base. Good on ya, Mark Whicker. Keep on trolling.
The Story: Mike Trout won the Heart and Hustle Award.
The Monkey Says: So he wins an award for having passion, hustling and being gritty. Remind me again how it is the old school baseball writers don't want to vote for him as MVP?
The Story: Did Mike Trout have the greatest Angel season of all time?
The Monkey Says: I'm sorry, but I have to give Trout the edge over Ryan's 1973 season. I just think when you adjust for era, Nolan's season isn't quite as impressive, although it is pretty damn amazing to look back at a time when pitchers threw over 300 innings.
The Story: Could Kole Calhoun be trade chip for the Angels this off-season?
The Monkey Says: This is all speculative, so don't go getting excited. I also don't think Calhoun is going to net a big return. He's never had a high profile as a prospect since he isn't particularly athletics or "toolsy." He definitely has the potential to be a regular at some point, but his upside is limited enough to make him either a guy you move in a small trade or as an add-on in a much larger deal.
The Monkey Says: To have Mathis as part of the deal made my day. I just wish I could've been there when the Marlins GM demanded that he get Mathis back in this massive salary dump.
