The Monkey Says: There is a good chance that a deal will be done by the time you read this. With the deadline looming today, they need to hurry up, but there is little reason to believe that talks are going to break down.
The Story: What would it take to trade for Joaquin Benoit?
The Monkey Says: This is why Jim Bowden isn’t a GM anymore. He did a post earlier saying the Angels would have to give up Taylor Lindsey, Jose Rondon, R.J. Alvarez, Victor Alcantara and Kaleb Cowart in order to rent Huston Street (and also get Yasmani Grandal), but this time he says that to get a year and a half of Joaquin Benoit (who might be better than Street), it would only cost Kyle McGowin and Joey Krehbiel. That’s comical on four levels. First, that isn’t much of a package for Benoit, and well short of the huge package he suggested for Street. Second, you would think that since the Angels are trading with the Padres again, that Bowden would suggest a package built around similar players to the ones he suggested in the Street deal, yet he somehow avoided all five of them and picked two new ones. Third, it is impossible because Krehbiel was traded to the D’Backs two weeks ago in the Thatcher deal. Fourth, McGowin’s value is well down right now because he hasn’t pitched since May due to arm problems.
