The Story: An idea for the Angels to trade C.J. Cron and Alex Yarbrough for David Price.
The Monkey Says: If the Rays were willing to take that deal, the Angels should submit it to the league office before Friedman even hangs up the phone and realizes what a colossal mistake he’s made. Cron’s profile is up now that he has MLB success, but neither he nor Yarbrough are blue chip prospects. The price for Price is probably going to be somewhere between what the Angels paid to rent Greinke and what the Royals paid for two years of James Shields. This proposed package probably only good enough to rent Jason Hammel from the Cubs. Jim Bowden continues to not know what he is talking about.
The Story: Last night’s Angels-Indians game was rained out with a make-up date to be announced.
The Monkey Says: The teams will pick a common off-day, the most likely being July 28th, rather than playing a doubleheader today.
The Story: Tyler Skaggs threw a bullpen session yesterday.
The Monkey Says: That puts him on track to return next week. This rainout will even help the Angels line up the rotation so that Skaggs can replace Santiago or Shoemaker without disrupting the rest of the rotation.
The Story: The Angels signed Wade LeBlanc to a minor league contract.
The Monkey Says: The Yankees DFA’d LeBlanc and he elected free agency. He landed back with the Angels likely because he knows that they are one or two injuries away from needing him in the majors.
The Story: Mike Trout is still the best player in baseball.
The Monkey Says: His two-homer game seems to have drawn everyone’s attention to the fact that his slump is well behind him. Plus, he is now back atop the fWAR leaderboard, which helps as well.
The Story: Mike Trout’s projected first three years rank among the best three-year peaks in baseball history.
The Monkey Says: We’ll see where he actually finishes this season, but it obviously is going to be pretty good. As he reaches his prime, his ultimate career three-year peak could be even better, but to do what he has done to start his career is pretty amazing.
The Story: Mike Trout is picking his spots for stolen bases.
The Monkey Says: Sure, most base stealers do. It seems more likely though that Trout is healthy after having nagging leg and back injuries earlier in the season. 4 of his 9 stolen bases have come since June 5th, lending credence to the real motivator for steals being his health and not the situation.
The Story: Nobody can find Raul Ibanez’s foul ball.
