The Monkey Says: Drafting football players was an old trick the Eddie Bane regime loved for some reason. Let's just be thankful that this didn't happen because Tebowmania coming to Anaheim might have been enough to make me quit life.
The Story: The Angels signed their third-round draft pick, Keynan Middleton.
The Monkey Says: He signed for under slot, as did two of the other top ten picks they signed. They have one other guy who signed exactly at slot, so they have some excess pool money to throw around which will be important when it comes to them top pick Hunter Green and some of the other high school talents they drafted.
The Story: Chris Nelson cleared waivers and has been assigned to Triple-A Salt Lake.
The Monkey Says: Not a bad guy to have around for bench depth should the team suffer injuries in the infield.
The Story: Buster Olney polled some MLB talent evaluators on the already tired Trout-Harper-Machado debate.
The Monkey Says: Not that you should care anymore, but Trout won. What is interesting is that a few of the evaluators cited health as a reason to opt in favor of Machado, but Dave Schoenfield did a case study that showed how an outfielder might actually prove more durable than a third baseman like Machado.
The Story: Mike Trout is no one-year wonder.
The Monkey Says: Well, duh. Did anyone really think he would tank this year? I know many predicted a more mortal season, but there were no proclamations of doom that I can recall.
The Story: The Angels are being victimized by left-handed pitching this season.
The Monkey Says: I have to say this surprised me. The Halos murdered southpaws last year, but they aren't doing so this year and I hardly noticed. I have to think Josh Hamilton is a big part of the problem, but there are other guys who aren't holding up their end of the bargain. It will be curious to see if this doesn't correct itself by the end of the year seeing how most of their best hitters are all right-handed.
