The Story: Josh Hamilton and Jake Peavy are emotional contrasts.
The Monkey Says: This seems a little forced and a bit cheap to me. Dragging Hamilton’s placid demeanor out for another flogging just isn’t needed. Yes, Peavy is fiery, which makes fans feel better, but doesn’t necessarily mean anything. Garret Anderson was a great player and he barely had a pulse. Milton Bradley’s fiery demeanor cost him a job more than once. Cherrypicking Peavy because he happens to be experiencing success right now just isn’t fair.
The Story: The Angels claimed catcher Jackson Williams off waivers from the Colorado Rockies.
The Monkey Says: He was immediately placed on the 60-day DL, partially because of a knee injury and partially to keep a 40-man roster spot open. Williams is a defensive specialist catcher who is simply organizational depth. He was also the catcher for Garrett Richards in college, so maybe he was picked up to give Garrett a rehab buddy.
The Story: Cal Towey is off to a hot start in the Arizona Fall League.
The Monkey Says: Towey is one of the older players in the AFL, but he has a nice bat, though not all that high of a ceiling. He projects more as a utilityman, but there is sleeper potential there.
The Story: Cal Towey gets even more attention from the Baseball Prospectus staff.
The Monkey Says: Just reiterating that he is drawing eyeballs and will be someone worth monitoring as he climbs the organizational ladder. Of course, they did sneak in the requisite dig at the general lousiness of the Angels farm system. So there’s that.
