Halo Headlines: Haren picks Nats over Halos, Angels pursuing McCarthy, no longer in on Dempster

The December 5th, 2012 edition of daily news for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim including Haren picks Nats over Halos, Angels pursuing McCarthy, no longer in on Dempster and much more…

The Story: Dan Haren signed a one-year, $13 million deal with the Nationals after turning down a one-year incentive-laden contract from the Angels.

The Monkey Says: The Halos offered Danny about half the guaranteed money but did apparently have an offer that included a vesting option for 2014.  This is surprising on two levels because Haren seemed to have a strong preference for the West Coast and even said he'd be willing to take less money to stay in Anaheim.  Obviously he probably felt a little scorned after his failed trade to Chicago.  From the Angels' end, I'm a bit surprised to see them aking a strong play to lock in Haren before Greinke had made his decision (assuming their offer wasn't contingent on Zack signing elsewhere). Although I suppose it is possible that they could have kept Haren and Greinke and just kicked Richards to the bullpen. Or maybe they are really as out on Greinke as reports suggest.

The Story: The Angels' interest in Brandon McCarthy is picking up steam.

The Monkey Says: This should please a lot of fans who have been begging the Halos to go after McCarthy.  Don't get too excited though because the Angels aren't the only team said to be getting serious on the pitcher.

The Story: The Red Sox and the Angels are believed to be the two main suitors for Kyle Lohse.

The Monkey Says: Yuck.  Lohse scares me on several levels and I would hate to see the Angels sign him to a long-term deal.  I wouldn't worry too much just yet because the Halos have been linked to literally every half-decent starting pitcher on the free agent market.

The Story: The Halos have dropped out of the bidding for Ryan Dempster.

The Monkey Says: Good.  He did not seem to adjust well to the American League.

The Story: Torii Hunter issued a personal thank you to Angels fans on hsi website.

The Monkey Says: Classy until the very end.

The Story: Mike Trout won GIBBY awards for top play and top rookie.

The Monkey Says: I have no idea what a GIBBY is, but this TOTALLY atones for the MVP snub.  Am I right?

The Story: Angels Win has released their top 50 Angel prospects.

The Monkey Says: The MWAH prospect list comes out right after the new year.  We only go to 30, which was tough to get to, so I can't imagine what it took for AW to get to 50.

The Story: The Angels should totally trade for Alex Rodriguez (no, not really).

The Monkey Says: When I saw this pop up in my RSS feed I thought Hudson had lost his mind for a minute.  That was a close one.
