Halo Headlines: Joe Blanton is really bad, best Angels deadline deal ever

The July 26th, 2013 edition of daily news for the Los Angeles Angels including Joe Blanton is really bad, best Angels deadline deal ever and much more…

The Story: Joe Blanton is so bad he broke BABIP and FIP.

The Monkey Says: I knew Blanton had been bad, but I had not realized just how staggeringly bad he had been and for how long. It really does call into question how a GM that claims to be so saber-friendly ever thought he was worth a two-year investment.

The Story: The best Angels trade deadline deal ever  is… the Teixeira.

The Monkey Says: NOPE. Nothing drives me crazier than the connection of losing Teixeira resulting in the Angels getting Trout. That is wrong, wrong, wrong. All it led to was the Angels drafting Randal Grichuk. I don't know why I have to keep explaining this.

The Story: Joe Blanton might be the canary in the coal min when it comes to using strikeout-to-walk ratio as a measure of talent.

The Monkey Says: I've never cared for K:BB ratios as it is because there is a huge distinction than a guy who strikes out ten batters per nine innings and walks five versus a guy that strikes out four batters per nine innings but walks just two.

The Story: Hank Conger is climbing the catcher defense rankings while Iannetta remains amongst the absolute worst.

The Monkey Says: Conger only used to be a few spots above Iannetta, but he has made up ground now that he is playing more and has been doing a good job of controlling the running game. Keep in mind that this does not include framing, so the defensive gap between the two backstops is even more pronounced than these rankings suggest.

The Story: American League teams as professional wrestlers.

The Monkey Says: I don't even know wrestling all that well and even I know that the Scott Steiner comparison is pretty brilliant.

The Story: The Angels designated Billy Buckner for assignment… for the third time this season.

The Monkey Says: This makes room on the active roster for J.C. Gutierrez who will probably be DFA'd in a few weeks when Jason Vargas or Sean Burnett comes off the DL.

The Story: The Halos acquired Mets minor leaguers Julio Concepcion and Andres Perez for international slot money.

The Monkey Says: Neither of these guys seem like legit prospects, so the Halos probably didn't give up much bonus money. It still seems pretty odd.
