The Monkey Says: He'll be back today, reportedly. This is all perfectly fine, but the story broke in a weird way because the cause for his absence seemed to be a surprise to most and the reason for it sounded more like speculation than actual fact. Hopefully there was nothing serious that caused him to have to remain with his family.
The Story: Mike Trout is on the cover of the latest edition of ESPN the Magazine.
The Monkey Says: I find it funny that they put eye black on him even though he never really wears it (or does he? Wait, why can't I picture this? Am I losing my mind? Probably.). The peach fuzz on his chin is a nice touch too to make it seem like he is a little older than he really is. Oh, ESPN.
The Story: C.J. Wilson is the Angels' nominee for the Clemente Award.
The Monkey Says: I'm serious when I say this, but this is an upset. Hunter used to be a lock for the nomination, but then I thought it would go to Pujols because he also does a lot of charity work. Yet somehow C.J. pulls the upset.
The Story: The Cedar Rapids Kernels are terminating their affiliation with the Angels.
The Monkey Says: No word on who they are going to work with, but whoever it is, the Halos will almost certainly take over that team's Low-A affiliate. I don't know about you, but I hope they take over the Quad Cities River Bandits because I really want an excuse to buy this hat.
The Story: Despite big signings and a playoff push, the Angels' attendance remains down.
The Monkey Says: It started off way down, but has since recovered to a more acceptable decline. The team is still going to draw 3 million-plus fans, but the slow atrophy of the attendance is cause for concern. Personally, I worry that Angel fans are becoming Braves fans in the day. The team was always competitive but only once cashed in for a championship so fans sort of lost their fervor and they had a hard time even selling out playoff games because the fanbase became so accustomed to them making the playoffs and never doing anything. Sounds familiar, no?
The Monkey Says: That is just stupid. It also won't really help the Angels since they barely even three useful relievers much less 10.
The Monkey Says: I say pick them both up, though I am more bullish on Haren than Santana if they can only pick one. I just think that without knowing for sure that they can re-sign Greinke, the Angels need to make sure they have a filled out rotation because there are precious few options in free agency otherwise.
The Story: Mike Trout is leaving baseball for a career on the stage.
The Monkey Says: I don't see why he can't do both.
