The Monkey Says: There may not have been a person in baseball more beloved than Tony Gwynn. There were literally hundreds of articles written about what a wonderful person and baseball player he was. Obviously he has no ties to the Angels, but he was truly a one of a kind player and I was genuinely depressed when I heard of his passing.
The Story: Why do pitchers still pitch Mike Trout down and in?
The Monkey Says: I would guess that they aren’t all doing it on purpose. I’d also guess that part of the problem is that “keeping the ball down” is regarded as a smart thing to do for all pitchers, so it is hard for them to resist the urge to throw the ball down even though Trout hits those pitches well.
The Story: Trout solved his slump with the mantra of “don’t get big.”
The Monkey Says: That’s his bro-tastic way of saying to not expand the strike zone.
The Story: Matt Shoemaker is a quality starting pitcher.
The Monkey Says: He’s half right. Shoemaker is definitely a starting pitcher, but I’m still not sure about the quality part. Shoemaker appears to be good enough to have a career, but I really don’t see him as anything more than a fifth starter. That’s a fine way to make a living, but I don’t know if it equals “quality.”
The Story: The 16 “hottest” teams in baseball.
The Monkey Says: I already checked under the car seat, all I found was Efren Navarro and Jeremy Berg. Sorry.
The Story: Mike Trout remains in second place in AL All-Star voting.
The Monkey Says: All other Angels remain well out of the balloting picture.
The Story: Erick Aybar was held out of Monday’s game as a precaution.
The Monkey Says: He will likely start tonight.
