The Story: Albert Pujols supposedly predicted he would hit his 499th and 500th homers prior to Tuesday’s game.
The Monkey Says: That feels like one of those things where a guy was just goofing around and didn’t actually really think he would pull the feat off. Then again, Pujols seems so deadly serious that I could buy him actually predicting it.
The Story: The man who caught Albert Pujols’ 500th homer asked for nothing in return.
The Monkey Says: He is an Angels fan and he is also a better person than you.
The Story: How many more homers will Albert Pujols hit?
The Monkey Says: I think he’ll reach 600, but I have a hard time believing he’ll stay healthy enough to get much past that.
The Story: Albert Pujols rewrites the script on his perceived decline.
The Monkey Says: So far. What he hasn’t shown is that he can reverse the script on his health problems. That’s my biggest fear with him right now and I don’t see it dissipating anytime soon.
The Story: Albert Pujols isn’t finished yet.
The Monkey Says: Great points here about how the saga over his contract, slow start in April of 2012 and injury-plagued 2013 kind of made everyone forget how very amazing Pujols was not so long ago. It definitely made everyone forget that he might actually still have some of that amazingness left in him.
The Story: Who does and should Pujols’ 500th homer have meaning to?
The Monkey Says: As I said yesterday, I don’t think it has meaning to the Angels at all. It is a nice thing for him, but so little of the compilation came with the Halos that it is hard to have any real emotional investment in it.
The Story: Sean Burnett and Dane De La Rosa will both throw simulated games tomorrow.
The Monkey Says: That’s progress but the injury situations for both guys are so nebulous that there is no telling how soon either will return.
The Story: Ernesto Frieri is allowing more homers than usual.
The Monkey Says: Not really. He has major issues allowing homers and always has. He throws almost all fastballs and has poor command, that leads to mistakes that get punished by guys sitting on his heater. There is nothing to suggest he will cease making mistakes, but he could mitigate the problem by becoming less reliant on his fastball. That has its own pitfalls, but so does having a closer with severe homeritis.
