Halo Headlines: Scioscia explains why he pulled Greinke, Dipoto won’t call team a disappointment, Weaver and Greinke to stay on regular rest

The September 17th, 2012 edition of daily news for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim including Scioscia explains why he pulled Greinke, Dipoto won't call team a disappointment, Weaver and Greinke to stay on regular rest and much more…

The Story: Mike Scioscia explains his decision to pull Zack Greinke with one out in the ninth on Saturday.

The Monkey Says: I don't have a huge problem with Scioscia going to his closer in that situation.  Yes, Frieri had thrown 30 pitches the night before, but that was also the first appearance he had made in five days.  It was a risk since Scioscia had never tried using Ernie the day after a workload like that though.  No, my real issue is that Greinke seemed to be just fine and the line about his back and pitch count smells like Grade A BS.  To me, it was a manager just going "by the book" and yanking him because he allowed a baserunner, plain and simple.

The Story: Jerry Dipoto won't call this season a disappointment since there is still time left in the season.

The Monkey Says: He must be taking media lessons from Scioscia.  The only thing he was missing was a "one game at a time" line.

The Story: Jered Weaver and Zack Greinke will remain on regular rest for the remainder of the season.

The Monkey Says: Santana's minor injury is just a convenient excuse.  The Halos realize they are desperate and are wisely maximizing their usage of their two best pitchers which they have the luxury of since they have two off days left on their schedule, including today.  However, what this means is that neither Weaver nor Greinke will pitch in the final series of the season, though that should have them fresh to start in the playoffs should the Angels qualify.

The Story: Albert Pujols and his wife Deidre welcomed their fifth child, Esther Grace, into the world early Sunday morning.

The Monkey Says: If my math is correct, this means that Albert Pujols celebrated his huge new contract with the Angels by putting a baby in his wife.

The Story: Why Mike Trout is the clear MVP over Miguel Cabrera.

The Monkey Says: If the evil four-letter network be on our side, then who be for them?

The Story: The official discussion on who should replace Mike Scioscia begins.

The Monkey Says: I think this is a tiny bit of an overreaction to the Saturday loss, but it seems pretty clear that by this thread's sheer existence that most Angel fans are ready to move on from Sosh.  I know Terry Francona is the popular name to replace Mike, but he isn't a strong tactitian which seems to be the main claim against Scioscia that people are using as the argument to fire him.  I don't think anyone believes Scisocia hasn't had a great tenure in Anaheim, but I think people are underestimating how hard it will be for the Halos to find a manager that is going to be a clear upgrade.

The Story: Jerry Dipoto still believes in Ernesto Frieri.

The Monkey Says: As well he should, the guy has electric stuff.  The problem is that when his stuff isn't working, he gets beat bad.  He has only allowed 32 hits in 58.2 innings this season, but a staggering eight of those hits have left the yard.

The Story: How can the Angels not re-sign Torii Hunter?

The Monkey Says: I think the biggest factor hasn't been so much Hunter's play but the play of Mark Trumbo who suddenly doesn't seem like a sure bet to be a quality producer in 2013.  Bringing Torii back on a one-year deal would be a very smart hedge by the Halos should this slump that Trumbo is in linger into next season.

The Story: Safety from crime and disorderly conduct has improved dramaticall at Angel Stadium.

The Monkey Says: I don't think this is a coincidence seeing how all the bandwagon fans that jumped to the Angels in recent years have now retreated back to Chavez Ravine.

The Story: Kendrys Morales talks about his preference to not use batting gloves.

The Monkey Says: You do realize that this likely means he pees on his hands, right?  Just ask Jorge Posada.
