The October 9th, 2014 edition of daily news for the Los Angeles Angels including Shoemaker, Richards change agents, Dipoto explains Trout’s reduced steals and much more…
The Story: Matt Shoemaker and Garrett Richards changed agents to Relativity Sports.
The Monkey Says: That agency has a huge client list, so there really isn’t much of a takeaway here other than both guys are clearly thinking about getting paid after breakout seasons.
The Story: Jerry Dipoto gives his explanation for Mike Trout’s lack of steal attempts.
The Monkey Says: He plays the “wear and tear” card, which is inconsistent with the excuses we’ve heard before related to pitchers focusing too much on him. The wear and tear excuse makes a lot more sense, but it seems like their could be a happy medium reached here.
The Story: Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait appears to have a significant conflict of interest in the Angel Stadium renovation negotiations.
The Monkey Says: Conspiracy theorists, start your engines! The fact that Tait owns land near the stadium is pretty damning and goes a long way towards explaining his stance on being more than willing to let the Angels move. His dealings in Tustin are curious as well, but only a factor if he actually thinks he can publicly war with Arte Moreno and then quickly smooth things over so he can get a piece of the development in Tustin should the Angels move there. That seems unlikely unless this Tait-Moreno detente is all just theater to grease the skids for the Angels’ exit from Anaheim.
The Story: A look at what the Angels might do this offseason.
The Monkey Says: Dipoto hints at adding more rotation depth, but also makes it clear that they probably aren’t going to be big spenders. He also says that the bench will be “a focus” this offseason, which seems like an obvious way to go after their lack of depth was exposed in the ALDS.
