The September 17th, 2014 edition of daily news for the Los Angeles Angels including Shoemaker to miss at least one start, Angels part ways with the scout that found Mike Trout and much more…
The Story: Matt Shoemaker will miss at least one start due to a mild oblique strain.
The Monkey Says: The Angels are treating this like good news, but it really isn’t. Yes, they are lucky that it is not obviously more severe, but even mild oblique strains have a way of lingering and lingering for weeks or for getting re-aggravated easily. Just look at any of Johnny Cueto’s DL stints. The only good news is that there is at least a chance that he’ll be able to pitch in the postseason. If he can’t, the Angels are going to have to make some really tough decisions about how to fill his role and how to construct their postseason roster.
The Story: Greg Morhardt, the scout that was responsible for the Angels picking Mike Trout, will not have his contract renewed for 2015.
The Monkey Says: This sounds scandalous, but scouts leave teams all the time and Morhardt was a guy from a previous regime. With the Trout story on his resume, he probably won’t have a hard time finding work.
The Story: 2014 is the Angels’ best chance at winning a World Series.
The Monkey Says: I somewhat agree. It is definitely the best chance they will have until 2017 since they are admittedly tapped out financially and won’t be able to make big moves to improve their aging roster. That being said, they have Mike Trout and two great young pitchers in Richards and Shoemaker (maybe a third depending on how Tyler Skaggs turns out). There is a core there to build around once guys like Wilson, Weaver and Hamilton start coming off the books after 2016.
The Story: Updating Mike Trout’s historical context.
The Monkey Says: UPDATE: he good.
The Story: C.J. Wilson is the Angels’ nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award.
The Monkey Says: The reward is for charitable work. Since C.J. has been giving away runs all season long, he is a natural choice for this honor.
The Story: Hal Morris is no longer in the running for the Diamondbacks GM opening.
The Monkey Says: Hal misses out on the privilege of being scowled at by Kirk Gibson at work everyday.
